The Crossway Story

A Community Rooted in Service

Crossway Community was founded in 1990 with a vision of strengthening families through education, housing, and community support.

The organization transformed a formerly abandoned elementary school in Kensington, Maryland into a community center where education, housing, and service could work together to support families in Montgomery County.

From the beginning, Crossway believed that stable housing, strong early childhood education, and supportive community networks could change the trajectory of families’ lives.

The Family Leadership Academy

One of Crossway’s most influential initiatives was the Family Leadership Academy, an innovative residential program designed to support women pursuing higher education while raising young children.

Participants lived on campus while receiving academic support, case management, and access to Montessori-inspired early childhood education for their children.

This two-generation approach helped families build long-term stability through education, community support, and leadership development.

A Model Evolves

Over time, Crossway’s work expanded beyond its early programs to explore new ways of supporting families and communities.

The campus evolved into what is now Montessori Living, an intergenerational model that integrates nature-centered education, community living, caregiver learning, and gathering spaces.

Today, Montessori Living continues Crossway Community’s mission by creating environments where children, adults, and elders can learn from one another and grow together.

Continuing the Work

More than thirty years after its founding, Crossway Community remains committed to strengthening families and building community.

Through Montessori Living, the organization continues to explore how prepared environments, thoughtful education, and shared community life can support well-being across generations.
