This Is What Community Looks Like
Intergenerational Living at Montessori Living
There are moments when a place reveals exactly what it is meant to be.
Today was one of those moments.
At Montessori Living, families, children, older adults, and volunteers gathered in the garden to prepare the soil for the season ahead. What unfolded was not simply a garden workday. It was a living expression of intergenerational community, environmental stewardship, and the quiet, meaningful work of caring for something beyond ourselves.
This is what community looks like.
Before any tools were lifted, families gathered under the sun. Blankets were spread. Lunch was shared. Children moved between play and rest while adults lingered in conversation. There was no rush, only a quiet sense of being together.
This, too, is part of the work of community.
And then, naturally, the work began.
In one part of the garden, people worked side by side turning soil and weeding. Nearby, a group of parents, alongside their children, moved nearly forty hay bales in under thirty minutes! Wheelbarrows moved back and forth. Children kept pace. The work was steady, shared, and unexpectedly joyful.
In another corner, a grandparent knelt beside a garden bed, hands moving with practiced care. A child worked nearby, watching, mirroring, learning without being taught.
This is intergenerational learning.
Not a program.
Not a lesson.
A way of being together.
Montessori education reminds us that the environment is a teacher. When we prepare environments with intention, whether classrooms, gardens, or shared outdoor spaces, we create opportunities for independence, contribution, and connection.
At Montessori Living, the garden is part of that prepared environment.
It is a place where people of all ages can participate in meaningful work. Where caregiving is visible. Where responsibility is shared. Where learning happens through doing.
Intergenerational living and community gardening are not separate ideas here. They are deeply connected. When people of different ages gather to care for the earth, they are also strengthening relationships, supporting well being, and creating a sense of belonging that extends beyond any single moment.
Gardens remind us that care is ongoing. What is prepared today supports what will grow tomorrow.
In the same way, communities are not built in a single moment. They are built through shared work, repeated over time.
Through showing up.
Through contributing.
Through being together.
This is what community looks like.
