Trees that Speak to the Soul
“There is no description, no image, in any book that is capable of replacing the sight of real trees, and all the life to be found around them in a real forest. Something emanates from those trees which speaks to the soul, something no book, no museum is capable of giving.”
Maria Montessori
The campus was abuzz this week as the children watched more elements of our outdoor school evolve. To their delight, they have watched the breakfast cafe roof over the patio get finished; and as if by magic, the construction of the almost-completed community gathering place. And today, the natural redesign of the campus continues as we plan for rainwater runoff--and most exciting for the children-- adding 'secret garden' plantings for places to read, explore, and rest. Each change brings more language opportunities: names of bushes and plants being moved; names of earth moving equipment and carpentry tools; discussions about where rainwater goes and the ecosystem. Don't forget to chat with your child in the car about what they are witnessing every day...they may surprise you with what they are absorbing!
Tomorrow will be a special day as children, parents, and the Crossway team gather to plant an orchard--a lasting contribution to the evolving school landscape, and a real-life lesson in sustainability. During this season of harvest, we will plant this orchard as a symbol of the deep commitment we have to place, to our families, and to the natural world. Next year, we will celebrate the Fall Fest/Garden Day with our first harvest from the trees in our orchard!
I hope to see you on Saturday...and find time to walk among the trees this weekend with your child!
