Rosemary Hope Trees: A Montessori-Inspired Winter Ritual for Families
At our Winter Market this past weekend, families were invited to take home a Rosemary Hope Tree, a living symbol of connection, intention, and togetherness during the winter season.
More than a holiday decoration, the Rosemary Hope Tree was designed as a family ritual. Each tree was adorned with cotton tags and twine, inviting families to write down their winter “hopes”, simple, meaningful moments they wished to share together over the coming weeks.
These were not resolutions or to-do lists. They were moments of presence:
baking cookies together, reading by the fire, going on a winter nature walk, writing letters to loved ones, making soup for a neighbor, or watching the sunset.
A Simple Family Ritual Rooted in Montessori Philosophy
In Montessori education, rituals and rhythms play a central role in supporting both children and adults. Repeated, meaningful actions help anchor daily life, especially during seasons of transition.
The Rosemary Hope Tree offered a tangible way to practice this philosophy at home.
Each time a family completed one of their hopes, they were encouraged to remove the tag from the tree as a small celebration, not of achievement, but of time spent together. Over the course of the season, the tree becomes lighter, while the family’s shared experiences grow richer.
This kind of ritual supports:
Emotional connection across ages
Predictable rhythms during busy holiday months
A slower, more intentional pace of family life
Why Rosemary?
Rosemary has long been associated with remembrance, care, and hospitality. As a living plant, it invites touch, scent, and use, snipped into meals, brushed by small hands, and nurtured through winter into spring.
Placed in the kitchen or near a window, the tree becomes part of daily life rather than something stored away. Like the hopes tied to it, rosemary thrives with care, patience, and attention.
Supporting Gardens and Outdoor Learning
All proceeds from the Rosemary Hope Trees support our garden and outdoor classroom, where children engage in hands-on, nature-based learning throughout the year. These spaces allow children to experience seasons firsthand, care for living things, and build a lasting connection to the natural world.
In this way, each Hope Tree extends its roots beyond individual homes and back into the shared life of our community.
A Winter Invitation
As winter settles in, the Rosemary Hope Tree offers a gentle reminder:
connection does not require grand plans or perfect moments. It lives in the everyday rituals we choose to honor, shared meals, quiet evenings, laughter, and presence.
A living tree.
A season of intention.
A reminder that togetherness is something we grow.
