Montessori in Action

A moment from last year’s Forest Bluff School DC trip, fully planned and led by the students themselves.

Student Led Learning Comes to Life

We believe education is not confined to a classroom. It is a way of living, learning, and engaging with the world at every stage of life. This week, from February 1 through February 4, that philosophy comes to life as we welcome middle school students from Forest Bluff School to our intergenerational campus.

The students will be staying in our Maria Montessori Guest Houses as part of their annual trip to Washington, DC, a journey they planned entirely on their own.

This is Montessori education in action.

Learning Beyond the Classroom Walls

Forest Bluff School is an internationally renowned AMI accredited Montessori school serving children from infancy through age fourteen. Their approach emphasizes whole child development, individualized learning, and mixed age classrooms that foster independence, responsibility, and collaboration.

Rather than having adults organize this trip, the students themselves researched destinations, coordinated logistics, created budgets, and planned daily schedules. This real world work allows adolescents to apply academic skills in meaningful ways while building confidence and practical life abilities.

It is a powerful example of how Montessori education prepares children not just for tests, but for life.

Montessori Across the Lifespan

We are proud to be an intergenerational campus where children, families, adults, and elders learn and grow together. Hosting Forest Bluff’s students beautifully reflects the Montessori journey from early childhood through adolescence and beyond.

From toddlers mastering independence through practical life activities to adolescents navigating real world projects like this trip, Montessori education evolves with the child. Each stage builds upon the last, nurturing curiosity, resilience, and responsibility.

This is what it means to live Montessori, not just study it.

Real World Skills That Last a Lifetime

Student led experiences like this Washington, DC trip support essential life skills including:

• problem solving and critical thinking

• collaboration and communication

• budgeting and organization

• leadership and accountability

• confidence in navigating the world

These experiences empower young people to see themselves as capable contributors to their communities.

A Global Montessori Community

Forest Bluff School is part of a worldwide Montessori network that shares a commitment to honoring the child, fostering independence, and cultivating lifelong learners. Welcoming their students to our campus highlights the strength of this global community and the shared values that unite Montessori schools across generations and continents.

Growing Together Through Montessori Living

We are honored to host these inspiring students and to witness Montessori education unfolding in such a meaningful, real world way. Moments like this remind us why Montessori is more than an educational method, it is a lifestyle that supports growth, dignity, and purpose across the lifespan.

From early childhood to adolescence and beyond, Montessori truly prepares individuals to engage thoughtfully with the world.

We look forward to sharing more moments from their visit and continuing to build connections across our Montessori community.
