The following is a Question and Answer with Matt Barry, the general manager at Westfield Wheaton. Westfield Wheaton is a community partner with Crossway Community. An open house and information session for the Community Montessori Charter School will be held at Westfield Wheaton on February 10th and 11th.
I have been here in this position for two years and so far, the extent of relationship is in the community and I am on the board of the [Wheaton/Kensington] Chamber of Commerce with Kathleen Guinan (Chief Executive Officer of Crossway Community).
I have written letters from Westfield Wheaton and from the chamber backing Crossway for the charter. It is something that I believe is very valuable for the neighborhood and the community.
Yes, the open house will be in February (10th and 11th). As far as the open house, we are happy to help with that and do anything we can to help with the process. Crossway wanted to do an event here to help get the word out about the charter school and how it will work. I thought this was a great idea. We have a good amount of people who come through here, about 10 million people a year come through the mall proper and that is not including the stores outside of the mall. A lot of our customers obviously live in the community so I think the charter school will be interest to them.
It is my understanding that Crossway will set up Montessori model classrooms here for potential families. It will be held at the Macy’s courts; which is where we have the majority of our events. We have the most space there.
I think from the Montessori education to helping mothers and their children it is really invaluable to the community. The community around here is really diverse in terms of ethnically and economically and I think Crossway does a really nice job of bringing the community together. We are happy to involve in whatever way we can. And I will do whatever I can to help.
